Travellers from visa-exempt countries who travel to Canada by air for tourism, business, family visits, study programs, or transit to another final destination, require an eTA.
The eTA is an electronic travel authorization that allows a stay in Canada for a maximum of 180 consecutive days.
Its validity is 5 years with multiple entries, each not exceeding 180 days.
Usually, an eTA is approved within 2 hours of submission, but any changes in timing are due to the Canadian Immigration Department, which may take up to 72 hours.
It is essential to emphasize that travellers from visa-exempt countries who enter Canada by land or sea (via bus, train, ship, or cruise ship) DO NOT NEED an eTA. The following individuals are also exempt from the eTA requirement: foreign nationals with Canadian official documents, travellers with a valid Canadian visa, travellers with valid status in Canada, foreign citizens in the following situations (French citizens living in Saint Pierre and Miquelon and flying directly to Canada from St. Pierre and Miquelon, foreign citizens who are passengers destined to or from the United States on a flight that stops in Canada solely to refuel and have adequate documentation to enter the United States or have been legally admitted to the United States, foreign citizens transiting through a Canadian airport under the Transit Without Visa or China Transit Program).
Countries exempt from Canadian visa requirements are:
Andorra, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Belgium, Brunei, Bulgaria, Chile, Cyprus, South Korea, Croatia, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Solomon Islands, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, United Kingdom, Samoa, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, British Overseas Territories: Anguilla, Bermuda, Gibraltar, Pitcairn Islands, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, Montserrat, Saint Helena.
